Personal Background
Bankruptcy lawyer Melanie Tavare was raised in Berkeley, California and has lived in Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. As a bay area native, Melanie is truly a part of the communities she represents and understands the unique financial burdens facing people living in the bay area. In 2012, after working at a high volume bankruptcy law firm for many years, Melanie decided to start her own firm where she can spend more individual time with her clients.
Right after law school Melanie was hired as a bankruptcy attorney and feels blessed to have been given this tremendous opportunity to help people. She truly enjoys the bankruptcy field because it is one area of law where she is able make a real difference in people’s lives. People living in debt not only are struggling financially, but are often times struggling emotionally as well. Not being able to pay your bills takes a toll on a person’s well being and family life. Bankruptcy law allows Melanie to offer her clients a real solution to their problems at a price they can afford. Melanie’s other great passion is being a good mom to her two young children. She and her husband are dedicated to giving them as many opportunities for growth as possible. Some of Melanie’s favorite activities include taking the family and their two dogs on long walks at Lake Chabot, visiting the neighborhood splash park and cooking. Melanie is also an avid writer and is currently working on a children’s book and Sci-Fi novel.

For many years Melanie Tavare worked as the head litigation attorney and personnel manager at an Oakland bankruptcy law firm. While there, Melanie met with countless clients and advised them of their legal rights regarding bankruptcy. As a bankruptcy lawyer, Melanie filed countless Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 consumer and small business bankruptcies. In addition, she was also responsible for all the legal research and writing needed by the firm whenever an issue required litigation. These situations included: objections to Chapter 13 plan confirmations by the Chapter 13 trustee or creditor, opposition to motions to avoid liens, objections to discharge and collection attempts by creditors post-discharge.
While at the firm, attorney Melanie Tavare won a complex tax dischargability case in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals against the Franchise Tax Board of California, writing the winning brief and personally arguing the case in front of the Ninth Circuit. Because of this decision thousands of people spanning multiple states are now able to discharge tax debt that they were previously unable to. Education
Melanie Tavare received her Bachelors of Science Degree in political science from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001 and received her law degree from the University of San Francisco in 2007. While at USF, she worked as an assistant to a U.S. Magistrate Judge where she performed legal research and assisted the Judge in her duties as a visiting professor at Golden Gate University School of Law. In addition to her legal studies, she participated in USF's Criminal Law Clinic where she honed her skills as a legal advocate, having all the cases she worked on decided favorably for her clients.
